The Wear Something Rare Internship Program is for serious designers who see themselves as being future industry disruptors. We seek out creatives who are passionate about slowing fashion production down and preserving our planet. 

Curriculum:

Each intern is taught the necessary steps behind garment production from start to finish. Interns learn how to operate industrial level machinery; this includes Sewing, Cutting, pressing, embroidery and specialty machines. Alongside machine basics, participating interns will learn the principles of pattern making. Reading, drafting and learning pattern terminology are the key focuses in preparing garments for production, which is a process we hope every intern embraces. 

After completing the first step of sewing basics, Interns receive direct experience in creating industry standard garments by working with the Heiros line. They will learn the step-by-step process of garment production, such as:

  • pattern reading fundamentals,

  • material terminology & selection,

  • Pattern Arrangement,

  • material Cutting fundamentals & techniques,

  • garment sewing Fundamentals & Techniques,

  • and Fitting troubleshooting & solutions.

Producing high-quality sample pieces with minimal to no errors will be essential for completing the curriculum, allowing an intern to graduate and advance to a designer within the collective.*

Interns can take advantage of the shop’s multitude of industrial level machines — fundamental in the formation of everyday garments. This includes but is not limited to: 

  • Sewing machines: Single needle, Overlock/ serger, cover stitch and bar tack

  • Cutting Machines: Rotary Cutter

  • Pressing & Finishing Machines: Steaming Iron

  • Embroidery Machines: Hand guided single stitch Embroidery

  • Specialty Machines: Button HOle, Button Sewing, Kick press

In addition to design fundamentals, interns benefit from a safe and fair environment filled with designers of varying demographics eager to share advice. 

Basic Qualifications:

The Wear Something Rare Internship Program is a rare find in today’s fashion climate, bringing the focus of fashion back to quality. We seek to send designers into the world with a firm understanding of why sustainability promotes unique and beautiful garments.

  • Cover Letter

  • Resume

  • written ideas or portfolio of design concepts (optional)

  • Desire or personal deadline to start their fashion business

We hope our interns turned designers leave with a unique and in-depth understanding of all facets in fashion design. 

Designers that partake in the internship may continue their growth within this program by participating in a mentorship following completion of intern curriculum.**
